Wilmslow “FoodFriend”

Manager: Flo Knowles - Tel. 07592 582 567

Food Friend is a facility where anyone (living within the SK9 postcode area) in financial need can access free basic food.

The project has been initiated by Wilmslow Parish Church and was launched in June 2011, and has now been expanded through the support of Wilmslow Town Council.

Although on the surface Wilmslow and the surrounding area is an affluent one there is still hidden poverty. So far the project has helped about 100 individuals and families in distress.

The Church is open 4 mornings per week 10am to 12.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and the 1st Saturday of the month with coffee and cakes for people to access FoodFriend. Flo Knowles, a trained counsellor, is also available as a listening ear and can assist clients in accessing other support and services.

We work in liaison with other community organisations such as CAB, the Red Cross, Family Liaison Workers in primary and secondary education, hostels as well as those who work with older members of our community.

Food is collected by parishioners from Wilmslow Parish and other community organisations and individuals each month. The food is then bagged up and can be distributed.

Buying food on a regular basis

You can do this by having your own ‘shopping list’. Please contact Flo if you would like one. You can also drop off any items whenever the church is open. We also need extra funds to cover extra food stuffs such as milk and bread.

Spreading the word about the project

Food Friend has been inspired by our church’s belief that we should help people in our own locality just as Jesus himself did. “Jesus took five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves and gave then to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people”. (Bible: Matthew Chapter14)
